Sign a PDF

Draw your signature with a mouse, trackpad, or finger — or type it and pick a style — then drag it onto the page, resize it to fit the signature line, and download the signed PDF. You can place a signature on more than one page.

Because the signing happens in your browser, your contract is never uploaded to a third party. It is a genuine alternative to DocuSign for documents you simply need to sign yourself.

Sign a PDF without uploading it

Signing a PDF used to be the most awkward operation in office work: print it, sign it, scan it, hope the scanner didn't cut off the bottom edge, then email the scan back. Then a wave of online tools moved the workflow to the browser — but most of them ask you to upload your signed contracts, ID forms, and NDAs to a server you do not control, which is exactly the kind of document you might prefer to keep on your own machine.

yourpdfeditor signs PDFs entirely in your browser. The PDF and the signature image are composited together in JavaScript, the modified file is built in memory, and the result is downloaded back to your computer. No upload, no account, no watermark on the output, and no “processed by” stamp added to your document.

The signature itself can be drawn (with mouse, trackpad, or stylus), typed in a handwriting-style font, or imported from a PNG you saved earlier. Once placed on the page, you can drag, resize, and rotate the signature until it sits naturally on the signature line, then save the signed PDF.

How to sign a PDF

Four steps from opening the document to a signed file in your downloads folder.

  1. 1

    Open the PDF

Drop the PDF that needs signing onto the dropzone, or click to browse. yourpdfeditor renders the pages so you can see where the signature should go.

  2. 2

    Draw or type your signature

Switch to the signing canvas and draw your signature with your input device of choice. If you prefer a typed signature, switch to type mode and pick a handwriting-style font. You can re-draw as many times as you like before placing.

  3. 3

Place the signature where it belongs

Click the spot on the page where the signature line is. Drag the signature to nudge it into position, and use the corner handle to scale it so it matches the size of the surrounding signature box.

  4. 4

    Save the signed PDF

Click Save. yourpdfeditor flattens the signature onto the page and downloads the signed PDF. The signature is now part of the document and will display in any PDF viewer.

Why sign PDFs with yourpdfeditor

Your contract never leaves your laptop

The PDF is processed entirely in your browser. No server-side copy, no audit log on someone else’s system.

Draw, type, or import

Sign with mouse, trackpad, stylus, or finger; type in a handwriting font; or drop in a saved signature PNG.

Resize and reposition

Drag the signature to nudge it into the exact spot on the line. Use the corner handle to scale without distorting it.

Multiple signatures per document

Initial each page, sign in two different places, or have several signers fill in their own blocks before sending the file along.

No watermark

The signed PDF is yours, with nothing added beyond your signature. No “signed using …” footer.

Works on phones and tablets

The signing canvas accepts touch and stylus input, so an iPad with Apple Pencil or a Surface with a stylus produces a natural-looking signature.

A common worry: “is this signature actually valid?” In nearly every jurisdiction, the answer is yes for ordinary agreements. The U.S. ESIGN Act and most state-level UETA laws recognize an electronic signature as binding so long as both parties intend to sign and there is a record of the transaction. The EU's eIDAS regulation classifies what this tool produces as a “simple electronic signature” (SES), which has legal effect across the EU.

What you get here is a visual electronic signature: an image of your handwriting placed on the PDF page. It is appropriate for contractor invoices, NDAs, rental applications, permission slips, vendor onboarding forms, internal approvals, consent forms, and the long tail of everyday paperwork.

When you need something stronger — a notarized contract, a qualified electronic signature (QES) under eIDAS, a real estate closing in some states, or anything tied to identity verification with a certificate authority — use a dedicated provider that issues certificates and produces an audit trail (DocuSign, Adobe Sign, your country's eID service, etc.). yourpdfeditor does not try to compete with those services.

Tips for a clean-looking signed PDF

  • Sign on the largest screen you have. A signature drawn on a phone looks shakier than one drawn on a tablet or laptop trackpad. If you have an iPad or Surface, use that.
  • Match the signature size to the signature line. Resize the placed signature so the bottom of the strokes touches the printed line in the PDF. Oversized signatures look like they were dropped in.
  • Use black for the stroke color. Black scans and prints best. Blue is fine if the surrounding form is also blue.
  • Save your signature as a PNG once. Then re-import it next time. The same signature on every contract looks more legitimate than a fresh drawing each time.
  • Add the date. Even though the file timestamp records when you signed, a visible date next to your signature is conventional and reassuring to the other party.

Frequently asked questions

Is signing a PDF here legally binding?+

In most jurisdictions an electronic signature is legally binding so long as both parties intend to sign and there is a clear record of the transaction. The signed PDF this tool produces satisfies the “electronic signature” definition under U.S. ESIGN and the EU eIDAS regulation, and is suitable for the vast majority of day-to-day agreements: contractor invoices, NDAs, rental forms, school permission slips.

What this tool does notproduce is a “qualified electronic signature” (QES) backed by a certificate authority. If your contract specifically requires a QES, or if you need a notarized audit trail tied to identity verification, use a dedicated provider such as DocuSign, Adobe Sign, or your local government's eID service.

Where is my PDF processed?+

Locally in your browser tab. The PDF is read into memory, the signature image is composited onto the page, and the modified PDF is built in memory and handed to you as a download. No bytes of your document ever leave your computer.

Can I sign on a touchscreen or phone?+

Yes. The signing canvas accepts mouse, trackpad, stylus, and finger input. A tablet with a stylus (iPad with Apple Pencil, Surface, Galaxy Tab, etc.) produces the most natural-looking signature. On a phone, signing in landscape orientation gives you more horizontal room.

Can I add initials or a date as well as a signature?+

Yes. You can place multiple signature blocks on the same PDF for initials on each page, and you can layer in typed text — for the date, your printed name, or a reference number — by opening the document in the Edit PDF tool after signing.

Does the recipient need any special software to verify the signature?+

No. The signature is rendered as an image embedded into the PDF page, so any PDF viewer (Acrobat Reader, macOS Preview, browser PDF viewer, mobile viewers) displays it the same way. It is a visual signature, not a cryptographic one — if you need verifiable cryptographic signatures, use a QES service.

Can someone modify the document after I sign it?+

Yes, technically. A visual signature does not cryptographically seal the document. If tamper-evidence matters, you have two options: use a dedicated e-signature provider that applies a digital signature certificate, or rely on an external paper trail — sending the signed PDF as an email attachment captures the version and timestamp at the moment of sending, which is usually sufficient for non-high-stakes agreements.

Can I reuse the same signature on future documents?+

Yes. After drawing or typing a signature, save it as a PNG to your computer. Next time you need to sign, drop the PNG onto the signing area instead of redrawing — the tool treats it the same way as a freshly drawn signature.

Is there a limit on PDF size?+

No artificial limit. Your browser's memory is the practical ceiling, and most modern machines handle PDFs up to a few hundred megabytes. Very large scanned contracts may run slower because each page has to be rasterized for display, but the signing itself remains fast.
